What Is Age — and How Is It Calculated?

Chronological age is the number of years, months, and days elapsed since a person's date of birth. It differs across cultures: in East Asian traditions (Korean/Chinese age system), a person is 1 year old at birth and gains a year every New Year's Day — rather than on their birthday.

Modern medicine increasingly distinguishes chronological age from biological age — how old your body actually is based on cellular markers like telomere length, epigenetic clocks (Horvath clock), and physiological function tests.

Age calculation is foundational for legal eligibility (voting, driving, retirement), medical screening schedules, pediatric development milestones, insurance rating, and age-group sports classifications.

Age Calculation Formulas

Years of Age
age_years = today.year − birth.year

if (today.month, today.day)
  < (birth.month, birth.day):
    age_years −= 1  ← birthday not yet this year

The birthday-check is crucial — subtract 1 if today precedes birthday in current year.

Full Age (Years + Months + Days)
same_bday_last_month = birthday this month
or last month if birthday not yet this month

months = months since last birthday
days = today − same_bday_last_month
years = full years component

Each component is calculated sequentially to avoid double-counting.

Age in Days
days = JDN(today) − JDN(birthdate)

Julian Day Number converts both dates
to a single integer count, making
subtraction exact across leap years.

Useful for milestones: your 10,000th day is approximately age 27 years 4 months.

Korean Age (Traditional)
korean_age = (current_year
             − birth_year + 1)

Note: no birthday check needed.
Gains a year each January 1st.
South Korea standardized to
Western age by law in June 2023.

A baby born December 31 is 2 Korean years old the following January 1.

History of Age Tracking

3000 BC

Ancient censuses record age

Egyptian and Mesopotamian census records tracked age for taxation and military conscription — among the earliest systematic age records.

1500s

Parish birth registers

The Council of Trent (1563) required Catholic parishes to record births and baptisms, creating the first widespread systematic birth registration.

1837

Civil registration in England & Wales

The Registration Act 1836 established mandatory civil birth registration, making it possible to reliably calculate age from official records.

1900s

Age in law and medicine

Age became codified in social policy — retirement ages, school starting ages, voting ages, and age-of-consent laws standardized across nations.

2013

Horvath Epigenetic Clock

Steve Horvath published a DNA methylation-based biological age predictor (Nature 2013), launching modern biological aging research.

2023

South Korea standardizes Western age

South Korea legally abolished its traditional Korean age system, mandating Western-style age calculation in all official and legal contexts.

Key Research on Aging

Age Myths vs. Facts

You lose exactly one year of life for every year that passes.

Chronological and biological age diverge with lifestyle. Studies show healthy habits (exercise, diet, sleep) can reduce biological age by 5–10 years relative to chronological age.

Turning 65 automatically means you're 'old' or 'elderly'.

65 was an administrative convention set in Bismarck's Prussia (1889). Modern research defines 'healthy aging' based on function and biomarkers, not a calendar number.

Your age in the Korean system is the same as Western age + 1.

Korean age = Western age + 1 OR +2 if you haven't had your birthday yet this year. The difference can be 1 or 2 years depending on birth month and current date.

Leap-year babies (born Feb 29) only age once every 4 years.

Legally, they celebrate their birthday on Feb 28 or Mar 1 in non-leap years, depending on jurisdiction. Their age increments every year like anyone else.

Frequently Asked Questions

How is exact age calculated?
The calculator subtracts your birthdate from today's date, adjusting for month/day boundary. It returns years + remaining months + remaining days.
What is 10,000 days in years?
10,000 days is approximately 27 years and 4–5 months, depending on the number of leap years in your birth range.
What is the Korean age system?
In the traditional Korean system, you're 1 at birth and gain a year every January 1st. South Korea legally abolished this in June 2023 in favor of Western age.
Does the calculator handle leap-year birthdays?
Yes. For Feb 29 birthdays in non-leap years, the calculator defaults to Feb 28 per ISO convention.
What is biological age and how does it differ?
Biological age measures your body's health state using biomarkers. You could be 50 chronologically but biologically 40 through healthy lifestyle — or vice versa.
How do I calculate my age in months?
Multiply years by 12 and add the additional months. The calculator shows this automatically in the output.
What age is considered a minor legally?
In most countries, 18 years. Some jurisdictions use 16 for certain purposes (driving, medical consent) and 21 for others (alcohol, gambling).
How accurate is the age calculator?
Exact to the day, assuming Gregorian calendar. It accounts for all leap years between your birthdate and today.
Can I calculate the age of a historical figure?
Yes — enter any past date as the birthdate and today as the end date, or enter the date of death to get their exact lifespan.
What is the retirement age in different countries?
USA: 67 (full Social Security). UK: 66 (rising to 67). India: 60–62. Germany: 67. These are statutory ages and may differ from actual retirement patterns.
How old am I in hours or minutes?
Multiply your age in days by 24 for hours, by 1,440 for minutes. At age 30, you've lived ~262,800 hours.
What is the world record for oldest living person?
Jeanne Calment of France lived 122 years and 164 days (1875–1997), verified by Guinness World Records as the oldest confirmed human lifespan.
