How a Drywall Calculator Works

Drywall — also called gypsum board, plasterboard, or Sheetrock — is the dominant interior wall material in modern construction. A drywall calculator determines how many boards you need by comparing total wall and ceiling area against single-board coverage, then adds a wastage factor (typically 10–15%) for cuts, doorways, and offcuts.

The key inputs are: room length, width, ceiling height, and deductions for windows and doors. Most boards are 1200×2400 mm (standard) or 1200×2700/3000 mm (floor-to-ceiling). You also need joint tape, joint compound (mud), screws (every 300 mm on studs), and corner bead for outside edges.

A professional estimator will also account for board orientation (horizontal vs vertical), stud spacing (400 or 600 mm OC), and double-layer requirements for fire ratings (FR boards as second layer) or acoustic partitions.

Boards = Ceil(Total Area ÷ Board Area × (1 + Wastage))

Total area = (2×(L+W)×H) + (L×W) for ceiling. Subtract window/door area. Typical wastage = 10–15% for squared rooms.

Joint Compound (Mud)
Mud (kg) ≈ Total Area (m²) × 0.25

Includes base coat (3–4 mm), tape coat, and finish coat. Three-coat system uses approx 0.25 kg/m² dry weight joint compound.

Screw Count
Screws ≈ (Board Width ÷ Stud Spacing + 1) × Board Height ÷ 0.30

With 600 mm OC studs and 1200 mm board, there are 3 lines of screws per board. Each line has screws at 300 mm intervals.

Joint Tape Length
Tape = Total Area (m²) × 1.2

Butt joints every 2.4 m height plus horizontal top/bottom joints add up to approximately 1.2 m of tape per m² of wall of drywall installed.

History of Drywall

Pre-1900s

Interior walls were built with three-coat lime plaster on wood lath. While durable, the process was slow, skilled-labour-intensive, and required weeks of drying time.

1916

US Gypsum Company introduced Sackett Board — multiple layers of gypsum plaster between wool felt paper, marketed as a fire-resistant base for traditional plaster. This was the forerunner of modern drywall.

1940s

WWII housing shortage drove demand for faster construction. USG developed Sheetrock® — a single-layer gypsum panel with paper facing — enabling rapid wall installation without wet plaster curing.

1950s–60s

Post-war suburban housing boom in USA and Australia saw drywall become the standard for residential construction, displacing traditional lime plaster entirely in new builds.

1980s

Specialised products emerged: moisture-resistant (green board), fire-rated (Type X), and acoustic drywall, expanding use into commercial, hospital, and high-rise construction.

Drywall Myths vs Facts

Myth

Green board is waterproof and suitable for wet showers

Fact

Moisture-resistant (green) board resists incidental moisture but is NOT waterproof. Wet areas (shower surrounds, bath panels) require cement board, tile backer, or a waterproof membrane over the cured drywall.

Myth

Standard drywall is fire-resistant

Fact

Standard 12.5 mm board provides about 30 minutes fire resistance. Fire-rated Type X (15.9 mm) provides 45–60 minutes per layer. Building codes typically require 1–2 layers of Type X for fire separation walls.

Myth

You should always buy 10% extra and no more

Fact

Wastage depends on room geometry: simple square rooms: 8–10%. Rooms with many angles and cuts: 15–20%. L-shaped rooms, many windows: 12–15%. Using a roomspecific wastage factor gives more accurate orders.

Myth

Screw spacing doesn't matter much

Fact

Incorrect screw spacing causes drywall to sag (ceilings) or crack at joints. GA-216 requires 300 mm max spacing on studs and 400 mm on ceiling joists. Overdriving screws breaks the paper face and reduces holding strength.

What thickness drywall should I use for walls vs ceilings?
Walls: 12.5 mm is standard, rigid, and easy to finish. Ceilings: 12.5 mm on 400 mm joist spacing; 15.9 mm if joists are 600 mm OC to prevent sag. Curved walls: use 9.5 mm for easier bending.
How do I calculate drywall for a room with cathedral ceilings?
Calculate the sloped ceiling area: width × slope length (not horizontal run). For a 10 m wide room with a 5 m slope, ceiling area = 10 × 5 = 50 m² per slope. Add 15% wastage for angled cuts at the ridge and eaves.
What is a butt joint vs a tapered (recessed) joint?

How much joint compound (mud) do I need per board?

Should I use paper tape or mesh tape?

What screw length should I use for 12.5 mm drywall?
Use 38 mm (1½ inch) coarse-thread drywall screws for single-layer 12.5 mm board into timber studs. For metal studs use fine-thread screws. For double-layer, use 65 mm screws. Bugle head prevents tearing the paper face.
How long does drywall take to install per room?
An experienced two-person team can hang (fix boards) in a standard 10×12 ft bedroom in 4–6 hours. Finishing (taping, three coats of compound with drying time) takes 3–4 days. Total from bare framing to paint-ready: 2–5 days. DIY: 2× longer.
Can drywall be installed horizontally instead of vertically?
Yes, and it is often preferred. Horizontal installation reduces the number of vertical butt joints (which are harder to finish), places any butt joints at hip height (easy to feather), and provides better racking resistance on timber-framed walls.
What is the minimum gap between drywall and the floor?
Leave 12–13 mm (approx 1/2 inch) clearance between drywall and finished floor level. This prevents wicking of moisture from floor surfaces. The gap is covered by skirting board. On concrete slab floors, this gap is critical to avoid moisture damage.
How do I calculate corner bead for a room?
Measure the total length of all outside (external) corners in the room. Each corner gets a piece of metal or vinyl bead. For a room with 4 corners (8 ft ceilings) with no outside corners, no bead needed. For columns or door reveals, measure each vertical outside corner individually.
How do I calculate wastage for rooms with many windows?
Standard wastage = 10%. Add 2% per large window or door in the room. A room with 4 windows and 2 doors: 10 + (4×2) + (2×2) = 22% wastage factor. Alternatively, calculate exact offcut areas from each opening and compare to board size to determine offcut usability.
