What Is Age — and How Is It Calculated?
Chronological age is the number of years, months, and days elapsed since a person's date of birth. It differs across cultures: in East Asian traditions (Korean/Chinese age system), a person is 1 year old at birth and gains a year every New Year's Day — rather than on their birthday.
Modern medicine increasingly distinguishes chronological age from biological age — how old your body actually is based on cellular markers like telomere length, epigenetic clocks (Horvath clock), and physiological function tests.
Age calculation is foundational for legal eligibility (voting, driving, retirement), medical screening schedules, pediatric development milestones, insurance rating, and age-group sports classifications.
Age Calculation Formulas
age_years = today.year − birth.year
if (today.month, today.day)
< (birth.month, birth.day):
age_years −= 1 ← birthday not yet this yearThe birthday-check is crucial — subtract 1 if today precedes birthday in current year.
same_bday_last_month = birthday this month or last month if birthday not yet this month months = months since last birthday days = today − same_bday_last_month years = full years component
Each component is calculated sequentially to avoid double-counting.
days = JDN(today) − JDN(birthdate) Julian Day Number converts both dates to a single integer count, making subtraction exact across leap years.
Useful for milestones: your 10,000th day is approximately age 27 years 4 months.
korean_age = (current_year
− birth_year + 1)
Note: no birthday check needed.
Gains a year each January 1st.

Western age by law in June 2023.A baby born December 31 is 2 Korean years old the following January 1.
Biological vs. Chronological Age

|---|---|---|
| Definition | Time elapsed since birth | Cellular & physiological health status |
| Measurement | Date arithmetic | Epigenetic clocks, biomarkers |
| Can be changed? | No | Yes — via lifestyle, nutrition, exercise |
| Legal use | Yes (all contexts) | No (not legally recognized) |
| Best predictor of… | Eligibility, milestones | Mortality, disease risk |

History of Age Tracking
Ancient censuses record age
Egyptian and Mesopotamian census records tracked age for taxation and military conscription — among the earliest systematic age records.
Parish birth registers
The Council of Trent (1563) required Catholic parishes to record births and baptisms, creating the first widespread systematic birth registration.
Civil registration in England & Wales
The Registration Act 1836 established mandatory civil birth registration, making it possible to reliably calculate age from official records.
Age in law and medicine
Age became codified in social policy — retirement ages, school starting ages, voting ages, and age-of-consent laws standardized across nations.
Horvath Epigenetic Clock
Steve Horvath published a DNA methylation-based biological age predictor (Nature 2013), launching modern biological aging research.
South Korea standardizes Western age
South Korea legally abolished its traditional Korean age system, mandating Western-style age calculation in all official and legal contexts.
Key Research on Aging
Nature (Horvath 2013)
DNA Methylation Age of Human Tissues
The Horvath epigenetic clock predicts biological age from DNA methylation patterns with ±3.6 year accuracy across 51 tissue types.
The Lancet
Global Burden of Disease — Life Expectancy
Global average life expectancy rose from 45.7 (1950) to 73.4 years (2022), driven by vaccination, sanitation, and chronic disease management.
WHO
World Health Statistics — Age & Health
WHO recognizes both chronological and functional age as determinants of health. Healthy life expectancy (HALE) averages ~63.7 years globally.
NIH NIA
Biology of Aging Research
The National Institute on Aging funds research on telomere length, senescence, and rapamycin as factors in healthy longevity.
Age Myths vs. Facts
You lose exactly one year of life for every year that passes.
Chronological and biological age diverge with lifestyle. Studies show healthy habits (exercise, diet, sleep) can reduce biological age by 5–10 years relative to chronological age.
Turning 65 automatically means you're 'old' or 'elderly'.
65 was an administrative convention set in Bismarck's Prussia (1889). Modern research defines 'healthy aging' based on function and biomarkers, not a calendar number.
Your age in the Korean system is the same as Western age + 1.
Korean age = Western age + 1 OR +2 if you haven't had your birthday yet this year. The difference can be 1 or 2 years depending on birth month and current date.
Leap-year babies (born Feb 29) only age once every 4 years.
Legally, they celebrate their birthday on Feb 28 or Mar 1 in non-leap years, depending on jurisdiction. Their age increments every year like anyone else.
