How to Measure

Why Sizing Systems Differ So Much
The U.S./UK "Brannock" sizing system dates to the 1920s and is based on barleycorn units (1/3 inch increments) from an old English sizing tradition, while the EU system measures foot length directly in Paris points (2/3 cm increments) — the two systems were never designed to align, which is why conversion always involves rounding rather than a clean formula.
Width Sizing
Beyond length, shoes are also sized by width (commonly narrow, medium, wide, extra-wide, labeled AA–EEE in the U.S. system) — a shoe that's the correct length but wrong width is one of the most common causes of foot discomfort, yet width is often ignored when shopping by length/size alone.
