Shoe Size

A numerical system indicating footwear size, varying by country (US, UK, EU, CM/JP) with no universal standard.

Shoe sizing varies significantly across regions. There is no universal standard, which is why international sizing conversion is essential for online shopping.

Conversion Table (Men's)

  • US 8 = UK 7 = EU 41 = 26 cm
  • US 9 = UK 8 = EU 42 = 27 cm
  • US 10 = UK 9 = EU 43-44 = 28 cm
  • US 11 = UK 10 = EU 44-45 = 29 cm

How to Measure

Stand on paper, trace outline, measure longest point (heel to toe) in cm. Compare to size chart. Measure in the evening when feet are largest.

Why Sizing Systems Differ So Much

The U.S./UK "Brannock" sizing system dates to the 1920s and is based on barleycorn units (1/3 inch increments) from an old English sizing tradition, while the EU system measures foot length directly in Paris points (2/3 cm increments) β€” the two systems were never designed to align, which is why conversion always involves rounding rather than a clean formula.

Width Sizing

Beyond length, shoes are also sized by width (commonly narrow, medium, wide, extra-wide, labeled AA–EEE in the U.S. system) β€” a shoe that's the correct length but wrong width is one of the most common causes of foot discomfort, yet width is often ignored when shopping by length/size alone.
