The Four Types of Date Calculation (And When to Use Each)
Not all date calculations are the same. Before reaching for a calculator, it helps to know exactly which type you need:
- Days between two dates โ counting total calendar days from date A to date B
- Add/subtract days from a date โ finding what date falls X days before or after a reference date
- Business days calculation โ same as above but skipping weekends (and optionally, public holidays)
- Countdown calculator โ days, hours, minutes until a future event
Our Date Calculator handles all four. Use the guide below to understand the logic behind each calculation.
How to Calculate Days Between Two Dates
The formula sounds simple: end date minus start date. But the answer changes depending on whether you count inclusively (counting both the start and end day) or exclusively (only the gap between them). This is the source of the classic confusion: "Is Monday to Friday 4 days or 5 days?"
- Exclusive counting (most common in date calculators): Monday to Friday = 4 days. You are counting the intervals between days.
- Inclusive counting (used in legal deadlines, hospital stays): Monday to Friday = 5 days. You are counting the days themselves.
Most date calculators use exclusive counting by default. If you are working to a legal deadline or medical protocol, confirm which method applies.
Manual Calculation Method
For dates within the same year: count the day-of-year number for each date and subtract. For example:
May 15 = day 135 of 2026. August 20 = day 232 of 2026. Days between = 232 โ 135 = 97 days.
For dates spanning multiple years: account for leap years (366 days) vs. regular years (365 days). 2024 and 2028 are leap years; 2026 is not.
Add or Subtract Days From a Date
Common use cases: payment due dates, contract deadlines, warranty expiry, recipe fermentation times, training plans.
Example: You sign a 90-day contract on June 17, 2026. When does it expire?
June has 30 days, so 30 โ 17 = 13 days remaining in June. 90 โ 13 = 77 days still needed. July has 31 days: 77 โ 31 = 46 days. August has 31 days: 46 โ 31 = 15 days. Result: contract expires on September 15, 2026.

Business Days: Calculating Working Days Only
Business day calculations are critical for shipping estimates, payment processing, project planning, and legal notice periods. The standard definition of a business day is MondayโFriday, excluding public holidays.
Simple formula for business days between two dates:
- Count total calendar days between the dates
- Subtract the number of weekend days (Saturdays and Sundays) in that range
- Subtract any public holidays that fall on weekdays in that range
Example: June 17 to July 17, 2026 = 30 calendar days. Weekends in that period: 4 complete weeks ร 2 = 8 weekend days + check partial week. Result: approximately 22 business days (before removing public holidays).
Public holidays vary by country and even by state/region โ our Date Calculator lets you select your country to account for local holidays automatically.
