A digital signature is something narrower: a cryptographic certificate operation that mathematically proves who signed and that nothing changed afterwards, required only in specific regulated contexts (some government filings, qualified signatures under eIDAS).
For offer letters, NDAs, leases, consent forms, invoices, and everyday contracts, an electronic signature is the accepted standard — DocuSign's core product is legally the same category. How the signature is applied to your PDF
Your drawn, typed, or uploaded signature is converted to a transparent-background image and composited onto the page at the exact position and size you set — the underlying document content is never altered. Because it starts as an overlay, the smart follow-up is flattening: the Flatten tool merges overlays into the page itself, so the signature can't be selected, moved, or lifted out by someone with a PDF editor.
